Getting Toddlers Ready for Preschool Over the Summer

Summer is the perfect time to gently prepare toddlers for the exciting transition to preschool. This season of sunshine and play offers a relaxed environment where children can build the skills they’ll need in the classroom — like following routines, practicing independence, and socializing with peers.

Getting toddlers ready for preschool over the summer can ease the transition and build excitement for the new experience. Here are some helpful tips:

1. Visit the Preschool Together

  • Schedule a tour: Let your child explore the classroom, meet teachers, and see where they’ll eat, play, and nap.

  • Attend summer events: Many preschools host summer open houses or meet-and-greets.

2. Practice Separation

  • Do short goodbyes: Leave your child with a trusted adult for brief periods to build comfort being apart.

  • Create a goodbye ritual: A special hug or phrase helps make parting easier.

3. Build a Routine

  • Set a consistent schedule: Wake-up, meals, naps, and bedtime should align with the preschool's routine.

  • Practice getting ready: Dress, brush teeth, and pack a bag like a real school day.

4. Encourage Independence

- Let them:

  • Use the bathroom with minimal help

  • Wash hands

  • Put on shoes and a backpack

  • Open snack containers

5. Read Books About Preschool

- Try:

  • Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney

  • The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

  • Maisy Goes to Preschool by Lucy Cousins

6. Talk About Feelings

  • Normalize worries: “It’s okay to feel nervous. Lots of kids feel that way.”

  • Use role-play: Pretend to be a teacher or student and talk through situations like sharing or asking for help.

7. Foster Social Skills

- Set up playdates to practice:

  • Taking turns Expressing needs

  • Saying “please” and “thank you”

8. Make it Fun

  • Countdown to the first day with a calendar or paper chain

  • Let them help pick out a backpack, lunchbox, or school clothes

Preschool may be a new experience. Although this is not an extensive list always remember to prepare your little one in a way or at a pace that is comfortable to them. Happy parenting and enjoy your summer.
